Uncovering the “why” behind crime to build safer, connected communities.
Uncovering the “why” behind crime to build safer, connected communities.
Traditional crime analysis often focuses on what happened and where, missing the critical contextual factors that drive crime. The City of Edmonton needed a tool to explore the “why” behind crime trends to enhance prevention strategies and optimize resource allocation.
In 2015 I developed the Contextual Analysis of Crime platform, leveraging advanced analytics to integrate social, environmental, and historical data. By analyzing contextual factors alongside crime data, the tool provides actionable insights into underlying causes, empowering decision-makers to address root issues rather than symptoms.
The tool transformed Edmonton’s crime prevention strategies, delivering a 1.6:1 social return on investment and winning the CiPA Best of Show Award in 2015. It enabled smarter resource deployment, enhanced public safety initiatives, and established Edmonton as a leader in data-driven community safety.
